Ex-President of Argentina Néstor Kirchner’s Funeral (Photo Essay)

November 3, 2010 By Joel Richards

BUENOS AIRES — On Oct. 27, 2010, former Argentine President Néstor Kirchner died at his home in El Calafate, Argentina. Kirchner, who was the husband of current President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, was a popular and much-loved figure in Argentina, known for his independent streak as well as his tough stance toward the International Monetary Fund in the midst of the country’s economic crisis. At a time when the Argentina faced economic and political collapse, Kirchner led the nation back toward growth and relative stability.

Kirchner also earned his fair share of enemies. His economic policies were blamed for the return of inflation at the beginning of his wife Fernández de Kirchner’s term. He gave up his bid for a congressional seat and resigned as head of the Peronist Party last year. At the time of his death, he faced accusations that the Kirchners intended to establish a political dynasty by alternating in power in a ploy to avoid term limits.

Latin America News Dispatch correspondent Joel Richards was in Argentina to capture the thousands of Argentines mourning the death of the former president in the country’s famed Plaza de Mayo.
