Cartagena, Beyond The UNESCO Heritage Walls

Straddled between two highways — in the shadow of planes descending into nearby Rafael Núñez International Airport — is the zone’s gritty La María neighborhood. Here, dilapidated steel shacks line the dirt streets, electrical wires dangle off buildings, and groups of emaciated stray dogs roam freely.
