April 17, 2019 By Jacquelyn Kovarik

RUNASIMIPI: Quechua, an Andean language, is the most commonly spoken Indigenous language in the Americas, with thousands of speakers. Quechua is not actually called “Quechua” by speakers of the language. They call it “Runasimi” — which means “idoma de la gente” or “language of the people.”

The news below was translated from Spanish and English into Quechua by Jacquelyn Kovarik. She translated it for the capstone for her independent study project with Dr. Odi Gonzales, the director of the NYU Quechua Language Studies program while completing her dual Masters in Journalism and Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Facing arrest, Peruvian ex-President Alan García kills himself

On Wednesday, April 17, Former President Alan García shot himself when police arrived at his house to arrest him. The 69-year-old initially survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries as doctors battled to save his life. According to authorities, García’s 2006 campaign was financed by the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, which has admitted to paying $200 million in bribes to secure public contracts all over South America. García’s lawyer, Erasmo Reyna, told press, “the president, upset over this situation, knowing his absolute innocence … had this terrible accident.”

The Odebrecht scandal has put many high government officials behind bars. Former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was also hospitalized yesterday after he was detained last week for allegedly accepting bribes in the same corruption investigation.
