Paraguayan striker Salvador Cabañas was shot in the head Sunday night in Mexico City, according to the Guardian Newspaper.

Cabañas, who plays for Club America in Mexico’s Primera Division, is in critical condition at a Mexico City hosiptal, the BBC reports.

Cabañas was conscious when he arrived at the hospital, but has a heart problem that needs to be stabilized. He was allegedly shot in the front of the head and there is no exit wound, according to Miguel Ángel Mancera, Mexico City’s Attorney General who spoke to the television station Televisa.

Mancera also said that the shooting occurred in the bathroom of a bar and Mexican authorities have two suspects under arrest. The motive for the shooting is unclear at the moment.

Cabañas, 29, who has played professionally in Paraguay, Chile and Mexico, was expetced to play for Paraguay in this year’s World Cup in South Africa and is linked to a move to the English Premier League team Sunderland.
